Rescue Me ID: 14-08-07-00682Layla (female)

Akita Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

'Let me tell you a little about me: I'm about 5 years old, medium-sized, with a calm, gentle disposition that immediately puts people at ease. Some people think my exotic smoky-colored coat gives me a scary look, but you know what they say about books and covers ...and on the inside, I'm a big ol' softy! Polite and VERY easy to walk on a leash, I'm happiest when I can say hi to everyone in the room, and then find that special someone to hang out with. (My friends like to joke that I'm 'working the room' - I'm not sure what that means, but it always makes them laugh, so it must be a good thing!)' Due to unforeseen circumstances, Layla's ... (Read More)foster family was unable to keep her, so she's currently staying at a local boarding kennel, where she gets lots of walks and attention from the Almost Home volunteers! One of them wrote: 'Layla has really settled in nicely here. While she enjoys chasing after a tennis ball and going for walks, she is just as happy to sit quietly by your side and get some well-placed scratches. Her coat is unique and stunning and must be seen to be fully appreciated! Layla cannot go to a home with other dogs (or cats), but she has gotten so much better when seeing other dogs while walking in the park. I know she'll make a great companion for some lucky family!' Layla's former foster mom said she was one of the easiest dogs they'd ever had - quiet, house-trained and does fine with just exercising in the yard. She knows some basic obedience cues like 'sit' and 'down,' and rides nicely in the car. Layla is great with people (both adults and kids), but not a fan of other large dogs (and thinks kitties would make a great chew toy!), so she would prefer a home with no other pets. (Less)

DO YOU LOVE TO CUDDLE AND PLAY? Dora is a LOVER!!! The most desirable home would be one with children, and a fenced in yard. She has to be leashed when taken for walks as she likes to run and explore the neighborhood ('Dora the Explorer'). Dora was brought home from the SPCA as a small puppy and chosen because she was the calm pup in the litter. She still maintains her calm nature today! Dora's background is a mix of Akita, Black Lab & Pit and she has all current vaccinations.

Rescue Me ID: 14-04-04-00028Nikki (female)

Akita    Age: Puppy

This is Nikki. She is a year and a half old Akita. She is up to date on shots and will be spayed prior to being adopted out. She is a little scared at first but seems to warm up to other dogs after a few days. She has been around a kitten and had no interest in her. She is a tall girl so an extra large size. She is all white and soft. She will need a home with dog experienced people and we suggest a fenced yard. Akita have strong guarding instincts and will sound the alarm if an intruder breaks into their house. Akita temperament can range from calm to bouncy and aggressive she seem pretty calm. Akita like to be 'pack leader,' so obedience ... (Read More)training would be helpful. Also daily brushing and exercise will be needed for Nikki. She is a gorgeous dog and looking for her forever home. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Akita in Pennsylvania
Akita Dogs can make good pets in Pennsylvania if they match your IifestyIe. The Akita Inu, or Japanese Akita, is a large Spitz-type breed of dog. Akitas are intelligent, companionable animals and make excellent guard dogs. Akitas are willful and need firm training. Akitas are protective of children in their own families, but may be aggressive toward outsiders and should be supervised with small kids. Akitas may bite if provoked; they need to be treated with gentleness and respect. Akitas can live in an apartment but do need sufficient exercise; they do best with a large yard.
