Akita    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Male Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Acquired: 2.26.17 Adopted: AVAILABLE Ava's story: Ava is an adult (born 11.8.12) spayed female Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, microchipped, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained. Ava comes to us after attacking and fatally wounding a cat, and injuring another, in her previous home. She has lived with a male Akita, and may do well in a home with a large, mellow male dog, or as an only pet. She would not be able to go to a home with small dogs/cats.

Acquired: 6-20-12 Adopted: 11-24-12 Missing: 4.26.13 Found: 10.17.16 Alice's story: Alice is an about 6 years old (born approx 6.20.10), spayed female Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained. Alice has returned from Wonderland! Alice came to us after being picked up running stray here in Virginia Beach, VA in 2012. She was adopted later that same year, but it wasn't working out and the family wanted to return her in April of 2013. She went missing the day we were supposed to pick her up from the adopters. Days, weeks, months went by ... (Read More)with no news. We presumed she was dead. Then, in October 2016 (nearly 3.5 years later!), we got a call from an animal control facility in Maryland saying they had caught a stray Akita in a trap and her microchip said she was Alice and belonged to us! We were floored and beyond excited to get her back! She's in great condition for being missing for so long, and we are grateful to whomever had been caring for her. At some point when she was gone, she tore both her ACLs and never received medical attention for it. She doesn't need surgery, but she has arthritis in both legs, so she'll need to be on a joint supplement. She's on supplement and back on her thyroid pills and feeling great. :-) This amazing girl with the incredible story is great with other dogs (she goes to daycare!) and very friendly with people. She would do well as an only dog or in a home with the right male dog. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Acquired: 9.12.16 Adopted: AVAILABLE Roxy's story: Roxy is a young (born approx 9.1.15), spayed female Akita. She is microchipped, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, crate trained, and leash trained. Roxy came to us with her brother, Bear, but we believe they could go to separate homes. Roxy is friendly with other large dogs and can go to doggy daycare, but she can be a bit of a bully, so she would need a home with a large, patient male. She was kept as an outside dog, so she will need a family that is willing to work with her on learning how to live inside.

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-29-00223Kuma (female)

Akita Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Kuma is an approximately 3 year old female Akita mix. She is up to date on all of her shots, microchipped, heartworm negative and is spayed. She has a lot of energy to burn and would benefit from a very active home that can both physically and mentally exercise her. She is very smart and picks things up quickly. She knew a few commands when she arrived; sit, down, stay, shake, other paw and high five. Kuma is a very vocal girl; she will talk to you, she howl at the sirens, talks back to you and generally just loves the sound of her voice while she is awake. :) I suspect there is some German Shepherd in her somewhere, she is an ... (Read More)excellent protector of the home and yard and will let anyone know when she sees or hears something that may be amiss. She is ball driven and will bring the ball back to you most of the time. Kuma has perfect manners in the house, is crate trained but does not need the crate. When I have left her loose, she was found either on a dog bed or laying in her crate with its door open. Not a single thing touched that she shouldn't mess with. To adopt Kuma, I will need a personal and vet reference, there will be a home visit during the meet/greet with her and her potential family and also a contract. She loves being with her people and can be quite affectionate when she wants to be. A home with very young kids or small animals would not be ideal for her, older kids and where she would be the only pet would be her best placement. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-28-00543Memphis (male)

Akita Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Memphis is an adorable Huskita (Husky/Akita) mix that is an absolute ham. He is an affectionate boy that loves to be with you, go on adventures or play with his toys. He absolutely adores my female Akita and they are best friends. She and him play to no end while outside. Inside, Memphis is calm and quiet unless you are entertaining him. He loves to sleep on the floor, dog beds, your bed or maybe even the couch (if you allow it). He comes from Memphis Animal Services where he was picked up as a stray and never reclaimed. He came to me heartworm positive but I have treated him with doxycycline to kill off the bacteria and then he had 2 ... (Read More)immiticide injections to kill the worms. He was a very low-positive and never acted symptomatic but I felt it was best to get him treated soon due to the resistant strain of heartworms coming from the Midwest. He is heartworm free now and is ready to find his forever home. He is housebroken, house and crate trained, leash trained and is microchipped. The Husky side of him is a talker and he will arrooroo to you if he is happy or wants attention and you aren't giving him enough. He would absolutely love an active doggy friend, male or female, although he seems more playful around the females. Memphis loves all people and is not overly hyper around young kids; my nephew and niece are 7 and 5 years old respectively. He has not been around newborns or infants but does not have an aggressive bone in his body, he loves to give kisses and is gentle. Cats and small dogs are also an unknown and he hasn't been exposed to them here. Memphis is looking for an active family that loves to spend time outdoors, he needs a 6' fence to be able to safely play in his yard without worries. Any questions you may have please feel free to ask away or to set up a time for us to meet you and the family. (Less)

Yuki comes to us after being surrendered by a family who was expanding and felt they could no longer care for her. She is a young, active girl who has lived with young children. PIease Read Before Adopting an Akita in Virginia
Akita Dogs can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. The Akita Inu, or Japanese Akita, is a large Spitz-type breed of dog. Akitas are intelligent, companionable animals and make excellent guard dogs. Akitas are willful and need firm training. Akitas are protective of children in their own families, but may be aggressive toward outsiders and should be supervised with small kids. Akitas may bite if provoked; they need to be treated with gentleness and respect. Akitas can live in an apartment but do need sufficient exercise; they do best with a large yard.
