Rescue Me ID: 17-07-11-00141Ryu (male)

Akita    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Acquired: 11.24.15 Adopted: 3.26.16 Returned: 7.6.17 Ryu is a young male (born approx July 2014). He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, heartworm positive, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained. Ryu spent the last six months (since July 2015) in a local animal control as part of an ongoing court case. He was finally surrendered by his owner, and we were allowed to take him into foster care. Poor boy hadn't even been allowed outside while at Animal Control because of the court case (though they wanted to let him!), so he was covered in 6 months of stale urine. He was adopted by a very ... (Read More)loving family, and, through no one's fault, he has be returned to our rescue to seek his forever home. He had previously lived with other Akitas, and gets along great with other dogs; he regularly attends doggy daycare. He is a big, goofy puppy who is great with people. :-) (Less)

Akita    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Acquired: 6-20-12 Adopted: 11-24-12 Missing: 4.26.13 Found: 10.17.16 Alice's story: Alice is an about 6 years old (born approx 6.20.10), spayed female Akita. She is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative, on flea/heartworm prevention, house trained, crate trained, and leash trained. Alice has returned from Wonderland! Alice came to us after being picked up running stray here in Virginia Beach, VA in 2012. She was adopted later that same year, but it wasn't working out and the family wanted to return her in April of 2013. She went missing the day we were supposed to pick her up from the adopters. Days, weeks, months went by ... (Read More)with no news. We presumed she was dead. Then, in October 2016 (nearly 3.5 years later!), we got a call from an animal control facility in Maryland saying they had caught a stray Akita in a trap and her microchip said she was Alice and belonged to us! We were floored and beyond excited to get her back! She's in great condition for being missing for so long, and we are grateful to whomever had been caring for her. At some point when she was gone, she tore both her ACLs and never received medical attention for it. She doesn't need surgery, but she has arthritis in both legs, so she'll need to be on a joint supplement. She's on supplement and back on her thyroid pills and feeling great. :-) This amazing girl with the incredible story is great with other dogs (she goes to daycare!) and very friendly with people. She would do well as an only dog or in a home with the right male dog. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Akita in Virginia
Akita Dogs can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. The Akita Inu, or Japanese Akita, is a large Spitz-type breed of dog. Akitas are intelligent, companionable animals and make excellent guard dogs. Akitas are willful and need firm training. Akitas are protective of children in their own families, but may be aggressive toward outsiders and should be supervised with small kids. Akitas may bite if provoked; they need to be treated with gentleness and respect. Akitas can live in an apartment but do need sufficient exercise; they do best with a large yard.
