Akita Rescue Information: The Akita Inu, or Japanese Akita, is a large Spitz-type breed of dog. Akitas are intelligent, companionable animals and make excellent guard dogs. Akitas can be aggressive toward some dogs and other animals. Akitas are willful and need firm training. Akitas are protective of children in their own families, but may be aggressive toward outsiders and should be supervised with small kids. Akitas may bite if provoked; they need to be treated with gentleness and respect. Akitas can live in an apartment but do need sufficient exercise; they do best with a large yard.
Akita Trivia: Japanese mothers used to leave children in the care of an Akita. The Akita dates back centuries and its origin is an island called Honshu in the Akita region of Japan. Akitas can pull sleds and hunt in deep snow. Helen Keller owned the first U.S. Akita.
